In Service Safety Considerations
Identifying and diagnosing safety problems of roads in-service requires understanding the complex interactions between road users, vehicles, roads, traffic controls and the environment.

Isolating the underlying causes of safety problems, and matching them with solutions which are innovative, effective, sustainable and practical, is an area in which Synectics excels. Services include:

  • Data management, analysis and network safety screening;
  • Operations and safety reviews;
  • Conformance (to standards) reviews;
  • Positive guidance reviews;
  • In-service road safety audits - RSAs;
  • Corridor safety studies;
  • Neighborhood and school safety studies; and
  • Roadside safety reviews.

Positive Guidance Gives road users the information they need to avoid hazards, when and where they need it, in a form they can best use.

Synectics applies human factors concepts and an advanced understanding of road user needs to identify information deficiencies and violations of expectations leading to errors and collisions. Countermeasures based on a positive guidance review suit implementation at moderate cost.

Synectics brings a holistic approach to understanding the causal factors which contribute to road crashes. Using state-of-the-art predictive tools, Synectics examines the whole-life costs and benefits of potential solutions, ensuring that only the best-suited countermeasures are recommended for implementation.

Roadside Safety focuses on providing a forgiving roadside environment through crashworthy design and the proper application of roadside safety devices. The intent is to reduce the severity of run-off-the-road-type crashes when they inevitably occur.

Synectics assists road agencies in: developing roadside design and maintenance policies, guidelines and practices; screening their road network for roadside safety concerns; and, implementing retrofit programs and design practices aimed at achieving forgiving roadsides.

Example
Synectics staff conducted a roadside safety audit for the City of Hamilton ON, Canada, which led to the development of formal roadside safety and protection policies; changes to their roadside design and maintenance practices; and a prioritized retrofit program aimed at reducing the severity of run-off-the-road type crashes.
