Synectics is widely sought-after by road agencies to provide road safety technical training, and to assist these agencies in building asafety cultureamongst their staff. Through customized seminars, Synectics provides a fundamental understanding of the emerging science of road safety, and delves into specific areas, including:

  • Safety program development;
  • Network safety screening;
  • Road safety audits – RSA;
  • Operations and safety reviews;
  • Positive guidance reviews;
  • Safety countermeasures selection and application; and
  • Roadside safety.

RSA Training and Audit Team Leadership – Synectics staff provides RSA training and RSA team leadership to road agencies, on a wide variety of road facilities, at all stages of the roadway lifecycle, in both Canada and the United States.

Synectics regularly conducts RSAs that are of a “first-in-jurisdiction” nature. When introducing RSA concepts, we teach agency staff through comprehensive “learning by doing” processes and by demonstrating first-hand the value of RSA in identifying opportunities for safety improvement. Agency staff often goes on to lead or participate in subsequent audits, building on their initial training and experience.

Positive Guidance – Synectics developed positive guidance review procedures used in the Province of Ontario, Canada based on original materials developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in the United States. Instruction in positive guidance compliments RSA and operations and safety review training by providing insights into the capabilities, limitations, information needs, expectations and motivations of road users. These insights serve as a tool for understanding the factors which contribute to road user errors and collisions.
